So, what exactly is “Hotboxing”? Hotboxing is the act of smoking marijuana in a small, enclosed space such as a car or small room such a bathroom. This is a favorite pastime of many smokers and its done to maximize the psychoactive effects of the plant, but the main goal of hotboxing is to make sure the smoke lingers in the room, causing everyone present to become extraordinarily high. Hotboxing is not necessarily the healthiest way to smoke marijuana, however, it is one of the most effective.
Because there is little to no ventilation in the “hotbox,” the smoker’s brain is not getting as sufficient oxygen as it would otherwise. By starving the brain of oxygen and inhaling more carbon dioxide, the marijuana has a stronger effect on those smoking it. Once the smoker exits the hotbox and ventures out into the fresh air, oxygen floods the user’s brain and intensifies their experience.
When hot boxing, smokers don’t only breath in their own smoke, but the remnants of the smoke exhaled by the other members in the space. This secondhand smoke adds to the experience and increases the psychoactive effects of the marijuana intensely. A study completed at the John Hopkins School of Medicine verified this and concluded that secondhand smoke does indeed allow one to feel the psychoactive properties of marijuana more intensely.
If you choose to smoke in a small room, make sure all ventilation is blocked off. This can be done by placing a rolled-up towel at the foot of the door to stop the exchange of air between the hotbox and the outside world. Next, it’s important to note that one joint will not suffice for a hotbox. You’ll need to acquire a decent amount of marijuana so several blunts or joints will be necessary. Blunts are preferable because they’re rolled with tobacco paper rather than rolling paper, producing more smoke.
If you choose to hotbox a car, do not bring your keys into the vehicle. The last thing you want to do is cruise around while intoxicated. It’s best to find a location to park your car carefully as what you are doing will become immediately obvious to people passing by. A good place is your driveway or an empty parking lot that’s away from main intersections and pedestrians.
Always exercise caution when hotboxing, and most importantly, have fun, crank some good tunes, and enjoy the session!
