As with any popular hobby, there are a lot of myths surrounding the growth of weed. A lot of rumors sprung up in the 20th century (prior to the internet), when people weren’t easily able to share information about weed growing. However, we now know a lot more about cannabis, and we can toss out the myths that simply aren’t true.
1. Weed Is Hard to Grow
People believe that weed is hard to grow because it takes a long time and requires a lot of light. However, in today’s world, growing weed is as simple as placing an order and following instructions for 8 to 10 weeks. There are so many high-quality guides online that you should be able to answer any question about cannabis in five minutes or less. If you can build Ikea furniture and have a basic amount of patience, you can absolutely grow your own bud.
2. Weed Is Expensive to Grow
Sometimes people look at top of the line hydroponic setups or industrial grow lights and assume that growing weed must be expensive. To be fair, if you get really interested in the mechanics of weed or start chasing a perfect grow, it’s easy to spend a lot. You don’t have to spend much at all, though. You can grow a few plants in a closet with nothing more than some five-gallon buckets and a single grow light.
3. Bagseed is Great for Beginners
Bagseed is any seed you find in your newly purchased baggie of bud. Some people say that these seeds are the easiest way for beginners to start growing their own cannabis, because of how easy it is to find them. However, bagseed is actually quite difficult to grow well.
Unless you can contact the person who grew what went into your baggie, you don’t know the growing habits of the strain. You might not have the right space to grow it, and it might not even be a viable seed. If you plan to grow, it’s best to buy seeds on purpose and not rely on bagseed.
4. You Can Tell a Cannabis Seed’s Sex
Some claim that you can figure out the sex of a cannabis plant from the shape of a seed. Supposedly, female seeds always look a certain way, and male seeds look different. This is completely false. A cannabis seed is a cannabis seed. If you want to guarantee that you’re only growing female plants, buy feminized seeds from a trusted source. That’s the only way to be sure.
5. You Should Water Weed with Juice, Kool-Aid, or Urine
Weirdly, lots of people claim that watering cannabis with anything from pineapple juice to pee is good for growth. The argument is that fruit juice affects the flavor of bud. Meanwhile, pee is supposed to be full of nitrogen and other nutrients (yuck much?).
The problem is that fruit juice is typically sugary and acidic. This will greatly affect your growth medium’s pH. Lowering your pH too much can cause nutrient burn, while sugar encourages the growth of pests. Similarly, urine often contains too much nitrogen, and also causes nutrient burn. Plus, it just smells bad when left to sit in your soil for weeks at a time(again, yuck).
Sifting through the myths can discourage you from trying to grow your own bud. You can spend as much or as little as you like, and you can routinely harvest great bud as long as you get your seeds from reliable sources. You can grow weed indoors, and it’s easier than you think.
