Whether you’re going to save your newly acquired cannabis stash for the big camping trip, or you’re planning on consuming it all this weekend, there are a few basic guidelines to know when it comes to keeping your weed fresh. Practicing good storage techniques saves you time and money, and it gives you peace of mind in between sessions. Here are 8 ways to preserve your marijuana and ensure that you never have to throw out your goods.
1. Steer Clear of Too Much Light
Both direct and indirect sunlight degrades your ganja quickly. Avoid this by storing cannabis in a shaded location or using amber jars for your stash.
2. Keep It Away From Too Much Air
If you don’t store cannabis in an airtight container, it will dry out. Make sure that your storage container is closable. Plastic bags are common storage containers because they’re cheap and everywhere. Consider using glass or metal jars, or try out weed pouches. Whatever container you choose, just make sure it stays closed so that you don’t end up with a pile of dust.
3. Avoid Excess Moisture
Mold can be a real thing if you store your weed incorrectly. Because cannabis leaves already contain some moister (even after drying and curing), extra humidity isn’t needed and can cause mold to build up on your buds. If you live in a home or area with high levels of humidity, it’d be wise to make sure that your weed is secured in a container with a tight lid to ensure that it stays mold-free.
4. Maintain a Steady Temperature
The cannabis plant prefers a temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so be sure to avoid extreme temperatures that can cause the plant to go bad. This also means NOT storing your weed stash in the refrigerator or freezer for any length of time.
5. Size Matters
Make sure that the container you use is the appropriate size for the amount of cannabis that you are storing. Don’t try to jam everything into a tiny little jar, and don’t try to place a small amount into a jumbo Tupperware container. It’s best to something that fits everything loosely inside with a minimal amount of extra space.
6. Don’t Mix & Match
This storage tip applies to both tobacco and cannabis. Do not use a tobacco or cigar humidifier for your cannabis because these are two different products that require different specifications. Also, be sure not to store multiple types of cannabis in the same container. For example, do not put two different strains together, as each which will affect each unique flavor and quality. Also, be sure not to mix various forms of cannabis together either in one container, as they’ll require different types of storage methods in order to stay preserved.
7. Don’t Forget About Airflow
Remember, even if you’ve nailed down everything and have your product perfectly stored, it won’t last forever in an airtight chamber. Every few weeks, crack that lid and allow some fresh air to enter. It will keep things from getting stale and dry.
